November 2005 will see the arrival a new Archbishop of York,John Sentamu who was born in Kampala in Uganda, will become the first black person to hold the position at York Minster.Sentamu is the current Bishop of Birmingham, a self confessed fitness fanatic and the sixth child of a family of thirteen who,as a child survived a famine, will become after the Archbishop of Canterbury the second most senior figure in the church of England.The 56 year old whose independence of mind as a judge of the Uganda High Court once angered Idi Amin to the extent that he nearly lost his life when Amin set his henchmen on him,causing him severe injuries,that even years later,he was close to death due to internal bleeding.

The appointment has however not been met with universal approval by all, and he has received hate-filled racist letters.The soon to be Archbishop of York, knows these people are in the minority and he has had many letters of support from the people of York urging him not to be disheartened by the abuse.
